Reversing his former distaste for the former governor, New York City Mayor Eric Adams on Thursday formally endorsed Andrew Cuomo for mayor.
Despite previously calling him "a snake" and "a liar," Adams endorsed Cuomo in Harlem yesterday, adding that he is disappointed he was not in the race himself.
"Am I angry that I am not the one taking down Zohran, the socialist and the communist? You're darn right I am," said Adams, who dropped out of the race in September. "But you know what? The city means more to me than anything."
Cuomo went up in the polls by 13 points when Adams exited the race, likely picking up support from voters who had previously liked Adams.
"The mayor put his own personal ambition and ego aside to make sure he's doing everything he can to make sure New York remains New York," Cuomo said.
After the endorsement, Democratic mayoral nominee Zohran Mamdani, who is part of the Democratic Socialists of America and is not a communist, said that Cuomo is "running for Eric Adams' second term."
"It’s no surprise to see two men who share an affinity for corruption and Trump capitulation align themselves at the behest of the billionaire class and the president himself," Mamdani said in a statement. "We are going to turn the page on the politics of big money and small ideas that these two disgraced executives embody and build a city every New Yorker can afford.”
