A special election will be held on May 20 for Brooklyn voters for the District 22 state senate seat.
R' Nachman Caller, a real estate attorney and a community advocate for Borough Park, is the Republican nominee, while Sam Sutton, a long-time nonprofit executive and Sephardic community activist, is the Democratic nominee.
The seat is currently vacant in District 22, which covers parts of Midwood, Flatbush, Borough Park, Madison, Marine Park, Gerritsen Beach, Gravesend and Sheepshead Bay, because Simcha Felder, who held the seat until recently, is now a City Council member.
Sutton has worked for many non-profits, including serving 30 years with Sephardic Bikur Holim, a social service organization. He has also worked for the Sephardic Community Federation, New York Cancer Center, the Safe Foundation, and is a former trustee of the Langone Medical Center at NYU Hospital.
“My campaign is about bringing people together,” Sutton said in a statement. “I’m running to fight for equitable education, accessible healthcare, safer streets, and real support for our working and immigrant families.
Caller said he would champion rezoning to add more housing to the borough, and advocate for more independence for the city's Yeshiva schools, according to his campaign website. Caller said he has helped develop thousands of housing units in Borough Park, as well as lobby City Hall and Albany for tax breaks for landlords and developers of rental apartments.
Early voting runs between Saturday, May 10 through Sunday, May 18. Election Day is Tuesday, May 20, where polls are open 6:00am to 9:00pm.
