Sam Sutton, a long-time nonprofit executive and Sephardic community activist, was voted as the Democratic nominee for the District 44 State Senate seat which will be decided via a special election on May 20, 2025.

The Brooklyn Democratic Party on Thursday nominated Sam Sutton, a long-time nonprofit executive and Sephardic community activist, to run as the Democratic state senate candidate for District 22 in the May 20 special election.

The seat is currently vacant in District 22, which covers parts of Midwood, Flatbush, Borough Park, Madison, Marine Park, Gerritsen Beach, Gravesend and Sheepshead Bay, because Simcha Felder, who held the seat until recently, is now a City Council member.

"Given our community's growth and challenges, we need a representative who is deeply rooted in our community and understands its dynamics," Sutton said, according to a press release. "I am confident that my experience and dedication will allow me to effectively serve as our voice in the state legislature."

A Brooklyn native, Sutton has worked for many non-profits, including serving 30 years with Sephardic Bikur Holim, a social service organization. He has also worked for the Sephardic Community Federation, New York Cancer Center, the Safe Foundation, and is a former trustee of the Langone Medical Center at NYU Hospital.

"We need someone who is going to fight for the right resources and take on the tough battles for our communities' needs," said Brooklyn Democratic Party Chair Bichotte Hermelyn. "Sam has been a staple, and an inspiration for all of us, and has been instrumental in uplifting Brooklynites for decades--that's why I'm elated for his unanimous nomination for state senate, and look forward to working with him in Albany."

The special election for District 22 senate seat is May 20, from 6:00am to 9:00pm. Find more information about your polling site, click here.
