After failing to win the Democratic primary election in June, former Governor Andrew Cuomo on Monday said he decided to stay in the mayoral race.
"I am in it to win it," Cuomo said in a video posted on X.
In a statement after the video was released, Cuomo said he made mistakes ahead of the primary, won by state Assemblymember Zohran Mamdani.
"All my life I’ve been known for pushing too hard, but this time I played it safe, believing in the polls that said our campaign was way ahead, and not giving New Yorkers the campaign they deserved," he stated.
The former governor, who will run on an independent ballot line, also said he does not believe that New York City voters affirmatively voted for a socialist form of government that is hostile to business and economic growth.
"I do believe that Zohran Mamdani poses a serious threat to the future of the city we love. I will give it my all to stop him," he said in the statement.
Cuomo vowed to hit the streets to meet voters in person ahead of the November general election.
Candidates include New York City Mayor Eric Adams, Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa, Jim Walden and Mamdani.
