A volunteer cleanup will bring residents together Saturday, Aug. 8, to help refresh parks and commercial corridors across southwest Brooklyn. The cleanup begins at 11 a.m., with volunteers meeting at 29 Bay 25th St. before heading to Seth Low Park and nearby shopping strips.
The event continues a longstanding community initiative that encourages residents to take an active role in keeping local public spaces clean and welcoming.
"For years, I have been committed to doing neighborhood cleanups because I believe strongly in the importance of keeping the community looking its best," Assemblymember William Colton said. "Our efforts also serve as an example to our neighbors, who we hope will join us in future cleanups when they see the huge difference that a couple of hours of work can make."
Colton and City Councilmember Susan Zhuang are organizing the event, with volunteers from Chinese American Social Services expected to participate alongside neighborhood residents.
By bringing together residents and community organizations, the initiative encourages shared responsibility for maintaining parks, streets and business districts.
The cleanup is one of several volunteer events planned throughout the summer and fall. Colton has organized neighborhood cleanups for more than a decade, making the initiative a familiar tradition in southwest Brooklyn. The continued collaboration with community organizations has helped expand volunteer participation and sustain efforts to improve local neighborhoods year after year.
Residents who want to participate are encouraged to arrive at the meeting location before the 11 a.m. start time.
Volunteers will work in teams at designated locations throughout the neighborhood, with additional cleanup events expected later this year as the community continues its efforts to maintain cleaner parks, streets and commercial areas.
