School might be out for the summer, but Rethink Food is making sure children and families can still get a nutritious lunch.
This summer, the food justice nonprofit is delivering 100,000 meals a week across the five boroughs to communities hardest hit by the coronavirus pandemic.
In Brooklyn, the school's fielding the deliveries are St. Nicks Alliance at Brooklyn Arbor, St. Nicks Alliance at PS 81, St. Nicks Alliance at PS 150, St. Nicks Alliance at Sumner and Truth Center For Higher Consciousness.
Rethink Food founder and CEO Matt Jozwiak said the priority at Rethink Food was to be responsive to the needs of the communities it serves.
"While there is no one-size-fits-all model to feed our city, the continued support of our restaurant and community-based organization partners will allow our food truck program to provide critical support to these families this summer."
Gyro King is helping to prepare and provide meals that are kid friendly, healthy and have vegetarian options, with dishes including grilled chicken with rice, salad and steamed vegetables; chicken pita; and falafel pita.
The food drop offs are for students and families that work with specific community based organizations. Families wanting to join the program can reach out to St. Nicks Alliance for more information.
