This week, Governor Kathy Hochul announced $6.2 million in state funding to support healthcare and community facilities in Brooklyn. More than $4 million will go to StartCare and $2 million will go to New York City Housing Authority’s Breukelen Houses Community Center.

“Strong communities depend on having quality healthcare and welcoming spaces where families can access the services and support they need,” Hochul said.

The $6.2 million will be administered by the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York and will go to renovations and improvements at both facilities.

Hochul made the announcement alongside Sen. Roxanne Persaud during a back-to-school giveaway at Canarsie Park, where she distributed school supplies to families ahead of the new school year. The elected officials joined representatives from StartCare and Breukelen Houses after the giveaway to make the announcement.

StartCare plans to renovate its existing facility and expand its primary care and behavioral health services.

“This investment will help us address the wider range of substance use, mental health and social needs in East New York,” said StartCare CEO Jonnel Doris.

The NYCHA will use the $2 million for renovations to its community center.

“Every NYCHA community deserves welcoming, well-maintained spaces where residents can come together, access resources and build stronger connections with their neighbors,” said NYCHA CEO Lisa Bova-Hiatt. “This $2 million investment in the Breukelen Houses Community Center will help create a more modern and supportive space for residents.”
