A $15.5 million project to restore and upgrade the eastern perimeter of Prospect Park is moving forward, as a new protected bike lane along Ocean Avenue is expected to open soon.
The work is intended to make the park’s perimeter safer and more accessible for pedestrians and cyclists, according to BoroPark24.
The project includes a two-way, sidewalk-level protected bike lane along the park side of Ocean Avenue, where there was previously no dedicated cycling infrastructure. The bike lane will stretch along Ocean and Parkside avenues from Empire Boulevard to Parade Place.
The project, overseen by Prospect Park Alliance, is supported by the New York City Mayor’s Office, the New York City Department of Transportation, Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso and Council Member Rita Joseph.
For Brooklyn residents, the improvements will create a new cycling connection along the eastern side of Prospect Park while upgrading pedestrian space around one of the borough’s largest and most heavily used public parks. The infrastructure will better connect pre-existing bike routes on the avenues, helping close a gap in the neighborhood’s bike network.
The project also includes new trees, benches and other street furniture along the park perimeter. A redesigned entrance at Ocean and Parkside avenues will include expanded pedestrian space and a monument honoring Brooklyn trailblazer Shirley Chisholm.
Construction is now progressing into Phase 2, which includes restoration of the Lincoln Road entrance. Work is being completed in roughly 800-foot sections, with each phase expected to take about two months.
