Baby Shot to Death in Brooklyn

A 7-month-old baby was fatally shot on Wednesday in a suspected gang-related attack in Williamsburg, where a gunman on a moped opened fire as the child’s mother tried to flee to safety. One of the gunmen will be charged with murder.

A 7-month-old baby being pushed in a stroller in Williamsburg on Wednesday was shot and killed by a gunman in broad daylight.

At about 1:20pm, 911 operators started to get emergency calls from Moore and Humboldt Streets, according to New York City Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch.

Video recovered from the area showed two males on a moped driving northbound on Humboldt Street against traffic at 1:16pm. As they approached the intersection of Moore Street, the male sitting at the rear of the moped can be seen taking out a gun and discharging at least two rounds towards the southwest corner, Tisch said at a press conference on Wednesday.

There were several adults, as well as two strollers and several children, standing nearby. The 7-month-old who was stuck by the bullet was in a stroller, Tisch said. The baby was taken to Woodhull Hospital by private means and pronounced dead, she said.

In the time since, police investigators recovered video showing the suspects drive their moped out of 24 Humboldt Street in the Bushwick Houses just minutes prior to the shooting. Additionally, officers recovered the moped five blocks west of the shooting on Warsaw Place and Flushing Avenue, Tisch said.

The gunman was identified as Amuri Greene and he will be charged with murder, Tisch said at a press conference on Thursday.

After the shooting, the moped continued northbound on Humboldt Street, and then crashed into an oncoming car at Manhattan Avenue and Siegel Street, and both men are thrown from the scooter, the commissioner said.

The rear passenger landed so hard on the pavement that he lost both of his shoes, which are later recovered by police.

The vehicle collision corresponds to a 911 call placed at 1:25pm requesting an ambulance for an injured male. The rear passenger was then transported by EMS to Brooklyn Hospital Center, Tisch said.

Investigators believe that this male fits the description of our shooter based on both clothing and appearance. The male is now in custody on an unrelated investigation and detectives are working to determine his possible involvement in this shooting incident, Tisch said.

The outstanding suspect still being sought is a young male described as wearing light gray pants and a white t-shirt with a black surgical mask over his lower face. He was last seen fleeing towards the Marcy houses, according to Tisch.

"Right now, he is the subject of a massive NYPD manhunt, and all New York City police officers have a very clear picture of this outstanding suspect on their phones," said Tisch, who added that the shooting is believed to be gang-motivated.

There are no words that can mend the heartbreak this family is feeling now, said New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani.

"No declaration strong enough to lift the grief they are now forced to carry, no embrace wide enough to heal the hole that has been left in their lives," he said.
