Brandon West had spent a decade volunteering for political campaigns and working in city government when he decided to take a shot at elected office. With scant personal experience as a candidate, he sought support from a group that had been growing its own political footprint.
West, 35, met in a Starbucks off Flatbush Avenue last year with a few members of the Brooklyn branch of the Democratic Socialists of America, a relatively young organization in New York City of which he was a member. He said he wanted to run for the City Council seat in Park Slope, which would be vacated in a sweeping turnover of the legislative body in 2021.
