You can't beat the heat in Red Hook, as the public pool in western Brooklyn will be closed until mid-August.

The majority of the city's public pools opened at the end of June, but the Red Hook facility never did, although it was expected to open mid-July. However, the pool will now remain closed for another month due to a rupture in a water line, according to a Parks Department spokesperson.

"Just before the pool was scheduled to open, there was a major, unexpected failure in the equipment which operates the pool. We are working to make needed repairs as quickly as possible, but it will take time to receive some of the required parts," a statement on the pool website reads.

The Parks Department is currently in the design phase of a major $122 million project to renovate the Red Hook Pool and Recreation Center, the spokesperson added.

"This comprehensive reconstruction of the landmarked building will include rebuilding the entire pool basin and its supporting components. We expect to begin construction on this project in 2028, though this timeline is still preliminary and may shift as the design and procurement phases proceed," the spokesperson said.

Residents were encouraged to visit the Douglass and Degraw Pool, at 250 Douglass St., or the Sunset Park Pool, at 7th Avenue and 41st Street.
