New York City residents were warned about two potential health hazards: extreme heat and air pollution.
A heat advisory is in effect through 9:00pm Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service. The combination of heat and humidity is expected to make temperatures feel like 95 to 99 degrees Fahrenheit.
In addition, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation issued an Air Quality Health Advisory through midnight due to wildfires in Minnesota and Canada. The smoke from wildfires is expected to push the Air Quality Index to unhealthy levels for sensitive groups levels (101–150) today, according to city officials. Children, older adults and those who are pregnant and with medical conditions should limit their time outdoors and remain in a cool space.
Residents can pick up KN95 masks at two fire houses: 172 Tillary St. and 885 Howard Ave., as well as at Brooklyn Public Library locations.
New Yorkers are encouraged to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activity during the hottest parts of the day and spend time in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible. Residents should check on vulnerable neighbors — especially older adults, people with disabilities and people with chronic health conditions — and learn to recognize the warning signs of heat illness. Anyone experiencing hot, dry skin, difficult breathing, a rapid heartbeat, confusion, disorientation, dizziness, nausea or vomiting should call 911 immediately.
