U.S. Representative Nydia Velázquez on Saturday celebrated the campaign kickoff of Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso, whom she endorsed earlier this week to succeed her as she prepares to retire.
The pair were in Bushwick to celebrate Reynoso’s campaign for New York’s 7th Congressional District, which includes parts of northern Brooklyn and Queens. The district is currently represented by Velázquez, who announced in November that she was not going to seek re-election.
"I’ve known Antonio for a long time, and I know that he will deliver results for immigrants, working families, small businesses, and all New Yorkers. Let’s get this son of Los Sures to Washington!" Velázquez said on X on Thursday.
Speaking to the New York Times, the congresswoman cautioned New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani that his decision to campaign for Assemblywoman Claire Valdez, a fellow democratic socialist for the seat, could drive a wedge through the coalition that put him in office.
“Where I come from, we believe in something simple: if we organize, if we fight, we win. This campaign is about action. It’s about results. It’s about standing with working people - every time," Reynoso said on X after the party.
Reynoso, who is also a former City Council Member, joined the race in December, highlighting his maternal health programs for minority communities, his fight for better school bus service for public school students, and compiling Brooklyn's first comprehensive plan, which outlined housing and public health issues and solutions.
