Thousands of New Yorkers on Jan. 1 lined up in Downtown Manhattan to watch Zohran Kwame Mamdani be inaugurated as New York City’s 112th mayor.
Spirits remained high during the inauguration block party despite frigid temperatures, as Brooklyn residents braved the crowd to view the inauguration on large TV screens that were set up along Broadway.
Many residents said they came to show their support for the new mayor and expected change to city life as they knew it.
Ren Hughes, a Gravesend resident and livestreamer, campaigned for Mamdani throughout his mayoral run.
“I'm so excited to be here to see him actually sworn in,” said Hughes, 27, who hoped for the new mayor to keep chipping away "towards making his promises come true.”
Susan Matthews, a Bed-Stuy, dental hygienist said she was here to welcome change.
“I'm hoping that the working class people will see a difference economically, and to not have to work several jobs.”
