The New York City Department of Sanitation will conduct an Alternate Side Parking pilot in portions of Prospect Heights starting in August.
From Monday, August 3 through Friday, September 25, participating streets in the pilot will only require vehicles to be moved once each week for street cleaning, instead of the current twice a week schedule, according to a DSNY spokesperson. The pilot is centered around Underhill Avenue, from Atlantic Avenue to Eastern Parkway, and portions of the surrounding streets.
Existing ASP signs will remain in place throughout the pilot, but vehicle owners will only be ticketed if the car is not moved on the designated pilot day.
Enforcement will be limited to Thursdays or Fridays, depending on which side of the street the car is parked. Outside the designated pilot day, drivers will not receive an ASP ticket on participating streets, even if the posted signs indicate otherwise, the spokesperson said.
In a newsletter to constituents, City Council Member Crystal Hudson said her office has for years heard from area residents who asked whether twice-a-week Alternate Side Parking is necessary to keep neighborhood streets clean. The pilot will help determine whether once-a-week ASP can maintain the same level of cleanliness while reducing the burden on residents, she wrote.
If the pilot is successful, the results could make the pilot permanent but also help inform future conversations about ASP in other neighborhoods across District 35, Hudson said.
"Street cleaning regulations are absolutely crucial to maintaining a clean street, and we are working closely with the council member to monitor this pilot," a DSNY spokesperson told BK Reader.
The pilot includes the following streets:
- Pacific Street from Grand Avenue to Vanderbilt Avenue
- Dean Street from Vanderbilt Avenue to Grand Avenue
- Bergen Street from Grand Avenue to Vanderbilt Avenue
- St. Marks Avenue from Vanderbilt Avenue to Grand Avenue
- Prospect Place from Grand Avenue to Vanderbilt Avenue
- Park Place from Vanderbilt Avenue to Grand Avenue
- Sterling Place from Washington Avenue to Vanderbilt Avenue
- St. John’s Place from Plaza Street East to Washington Avenue
- Lincoln Place from Washington Avenue to Underhill Avenue
- Butler Place from Plaza Street East to Sterling Place
- Underhill Avenue from Eastern Parkway to Atlantic Avenue
- Washington Avenue from Prospect Place to Atlantic Avenue.
