On Sunday, Sept. 10, 2023, Brooklyn cyclists will get the opportunity to take in the beautiful sights and sounds of multiple boroughs on the NYC Half Century bike tour.
The NYC Half Century bike tour is a one-time-only event being put on in celebration of local nonprofit Transportation Alternatives’ 50th anniversary.
For a half-century now, Transportation Alternatives has advocated for safer and more sustainable streets throughout NYC’s five boroughs, leading to a number of impactful changes that will be highlighted throughout the bike tour.
The NYC Half Century event will take cyclists on a journey through the Brooklyn, Manhattan, and Queens boroughs. Along the tour, participants will have the opportunity to experience some of Transportation Alternatives’ advocacy-driven victories, including the fully protected bike lane at the Brooklyn Bridge, among others.
The bike tour offers three separate routes consisting of different distances — including a 10-, 35- and 50-mile route, respectively — which gives cyclists of all abilities multiple options to participate in whichever path they are most comfortable with.
All participants that reach the finish line will receive a victory medal in commemoration of the anniversary ride.
“We invite everyone to experience the unbridled energy and pulse of the city on bike,” said Kathy Park Price, Transportation Alternatives Brooklyn organizer. “The ride is also a testament to how far we’ve come as a city in advancing the needs of cyclists and pedestrians alike.”
Following the bike tour, participants are invited to attend a “Finish Line Festival” event at Industry City in Brooklyn.
The post-ride festival will feature music, several food and drink specials, a picnic for VIP ticket holders, and much more.
A number of New York City brands will be in attendance to provide refreshments, including Ample Hills Creamery — which will be offering special victory-themed treats. There will also be several alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages available to sample courtesy of Brooklyn Brewery, SixPoint and City Winery.
“Transportation Alternatives’ mission for safer NYC streets is vital to communities like ours at Industry City, and we are excited to partner with them on this iconic event,” said Jim Somoza, managing director at Industry City. “50 years of advocacy for vibrant and accessible streets is an incredible milestone, and we are proud that they’ve chosen to celebrate with us at the Industry City campus.”
There are several ticket options available — including general admission, VIP and Finish Line Festival only — which can be purchased on Eventbrite.
