Three students at BASIS Independent Brooklyn have been named National Merit Finalists, placing them among the top 1% of academic performers in the United States.
River Walser, Kanika Reddy and Alexa Goldfarb earned the distinction after excelling on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which is taken by about 1.3 million students nationwide, school officials said.
The school also counts three National Merit Semifinalists and six commended students this year, highlighting its emphasis on rigorous academics and a culture of high achievement. These recognitions reflect both strong individual effort and the school’s broader commitment to cultivating advanced skills and academic excellence across all grade levels.
“These recognitions reflect years of sustained academic commitment from our students, as well as their meaningful contributions to their schools and communities,“ said Toby Walker, vice president of BASIS Independent Schools. ”Consistently impressive results like these speak to the strength of our curriculum and philosophy across all BASIS Independent School campuses.”
The National Merit Scholarship Program is widely regarded as one of the nation’s most prestigious academic competitions. Students who become finalists advance through multiple stages of evaluation, including a detailed review of academic records, endorsements from their schools and performance on standardized tests. Finalists are recognized not only for high scores but also for demonstrating leadership, commitment and scholarly promise.
