The Richard Beavers Gallery hosted their second annual Bed-Stuy Family Photo Day on Aug. 24, where families had the opportunity to be photographed and leave with a professional quality portrait.
Ten professional photographers – Jamel Shabazz, Oluwaseye Olusa, Kay Hickman, Ian Reid, Stone, Brittsense, Vanessa Clifton, Russell Frederick, Daniel Greer and Megan Schmidt – donated their time and artistic eye to photograph families amid music, workshop and games, according to a press release.
Portrait photography is extremely integral to the preservation of Black history. The art form savors moments in time and tells stories of the past, present, and future, a practice that has not always been afforded to Black people, the press release said.
“Family portraits hold immense significance for families, capturing the love, the joy, the pride and intimacy of these relationships. This is our way of celebrating and honoring what is both ordinary and beautiful in our diverse community, and the lasting memories that family photos provide," said Richard Beavers, owner of his namesake gallery.
This initiative aligns with the gallery’s dedication to serving the Black community while providing a space for Black artists. The gallery aims to take this initiative on the road in the coming year, championing the power of capturing Black family portraits across the nation.
