Protestors Call on UJO to Remove Board Member Over Divorce Denial

Brooklynites called for the removal of board member Shulem Abe Deutsch amid allegations concerning his involvement in matrimonial disputes and Jewish religious divorces.

Adina Sash, known as Flatbush Girl and the Free Yides campaign held a rally outside the United Jewish Organizations of Williamsburg and North Brooklyn at 32 Penn St. in Brooklyn, calling for the removal of board member Shulem Abe Deutsch amid allegations concerning his involvement in matrimonial disputes and Jewish religious divorces.

In emails dated Sept. 7 and Sept. 15, 2026, Sash asked New York Attorney General Letitia James to investigate Deutsch’s alleged conduct and help identify resources for Yehudis Yides Kremer-Berkowitz, a Brooklyn mother who says she has been unable to obtain a Gett, a Jewish religious divorce, since separating from her husband in 2023.

Yides alleges Deutsch encouraged her to drop a temporary order of protection in connection with obtaining her Gett, but the divorce was not granted. Her court petition reportedly details allegations of domestic abuse.

“We've called on elected officials about this injustice, but our cries are falling on deaf ears Sash said. "So we have to take to the streets."

Sash says the campaign reviewed more than 1,000 lines of communications and can provide court records, recordings and witness information. She also reports receiving accounts from other women alleging similar involvement by Deutsch, while acknowledging that those accounts require corroboration.

The rally brought together people from diverse backgrounds to support Yides and raise concerns about coercive control, custody disputes and the challenges women face navigating civil courts and religious divorce proceedings.

The campaign also advocated for Kyra’s Law, which awaits action by Gov. Kathy Hochul and proposed legislation addressing coercive control, including bills S4079/A679 and S8633/A9551.

Jacqueline Franchetti, Kyra’s mother and founder of Kyra’s Champions, has urged Hochul to sign the legislation. Kyra, 2, was killed by her father during a court-ordered visit.

Sash has asked James’ office to speak directly with Yides and assess possible victim services and other assistance.

The campaign is not asking the state to adjudicate Jewish law or compel a religious divorce, but to examine potential civil concerns. UJO receives public funding and the campaign has requested scrutiny of any relevant institutional involvement.

The campaign continues to seek support for Yides and other women who report similar experiences.
