Brooklyn residents aged 16 and older can apply to serve on one of the borough’s 18 community boards, which help shape decisions on housing, transportation, public services and neighborhood development.
Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso opened applications Oct. 19, inviting New York City residents who live, work or have a significant interest in a community to participate. Applications close Feb. 8, 2027, at 11:59pm. Each board can include up to 50 volunteer members.
Community boards work with city agencies, elected officials and local leaders to address neighborhood concerns. They review land use proposals, weigh in on liquor licenses and transportation projects, and contribute to discussions about the city budget and services such as sanitation. Brooklyn has 18 community districts, more than any other borough.
The application drive aims to broaden participation and ensure board membership reflects Brooklyn’s diverse communities. Reynoso has directed Borough Hall resources toward operational training and support for board members and advocated for additional city agency resources to strengthen boards’ independence and long-term sustainability.
Boards meet monthly from September through June at accessible locations within their districts. Members must attend monthly board meetings in person, join a committee and participate in its meetings. The expected commitment is six to eight hours per month.
Applicants must provide personal information and explain their interest in serving. They will then participate in a brief virtual conversation with a member of the borough president’s team. Applicants will be notified of decisions after the selection process is complete.
Residents can identify their community district through the city’s community profiles website and find application details on the Brooklyn Borough President’s website.
