Nearly 100 people gathered at Brooklyn Public Library’s Macon branch May 8 for the 10th annual Mom-a-thon, a celebration honoring mothers and maternal figures from across the community.
The free event recognized moms, grandmothers, stepmoms, foster moms, single mothers, mothers-to-be and other caregivers who play nurturing roles in families throughout Brooklyn.
Macon Library branch manager Nicole Davis described the event as a celebration of women who support, inspire and uplift families across generations while highlighting the library’s commitment to creating a welcoming space for parents and caregivers.
“At Macon Library, where we welcome so many families, we work hard every day to create a space and community where parents feel supported and empowered,” said Davis. “But every May we take a moment to recognize the incredible mothers and mother figures who inspire, nurture and uplift our community in every generation.”
Guests enjoyed a sit-down dinner, live entertainment and wellness-themed gifts during the evening program. Vocalist and children’s book author Stacia Hodby performed for attendees, while former TIME chief marketing officer Sadé Muhammad delivered remarks focused on motherhood, community and empowerment.
Licensed clinical social worker Nneka Symister spoke about maternal mental health and support for women and couples experiencing perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. Attendees also received gift bags filled with self-care items, including water bottles, mirrors, fans, lotions, eye masks and umbrellas, along with products donated by Clinique.
Mom-a-thon is one of several programs hosted by the Macon Library branch to support mothers and growing families. The library also organizes community baby showers for expectant parents, providing free baby supplies, educational workshops and family resources.
