Highlawn Library will receive $1 million in capital funding to modernize key building systems and improve the branch for patrons, Council Member Susan Zhuang announced.
The funding will support upgrades to the library’s HVAC and building management systems, energy efficiency, fire alarm and other security systems. Zhuang secured the funding with support from City Council Speaker Julie Menin.
The investment was celebrated Friday morning at the branch, where families and community members gathered for music, dancing and story time.
“As a mother of two children who love going to the library, I believe our libraries are more than just places to borrow books. They are community centers — a second home for our children and a place where families can access knowledge, resources and opportunities,” said Council Member Zhuang.
The improvements will help make the library safer, more comfortable and more reliable for patrons while supporting its role as a neighborhood resource. Highlawn Library is one of Brooklyn Public Library’s busiest branches and has served the community from its current location for more than 50 years.
The branch is also one of the library system’s most distinctive, featuring a circular reading room. Its use by Brooklyn residents reflects the continued demand for library services and programming. Last year, patrons checked out nearly 80,000 books and attended more than 650 programs at Highlawn.
The capital funding will allow the branch to address several major building needs while improving the environment for children, families, seniors and other residents who rely on the library. The upgrades are also expected to support the branch’s continued operation throughout the year.
The Friday celebration highlighted Highlawn’s role as a gathering place in addition to its traditional library services. Families participated in activities designed to bring residents together and celebrate the branch’s contribution to the community.
The project will move forward with the planned modernization work. Once completed, the upgrades will provide Highlawn Library with updated building and safety systems while helping preserve the branch as an important neighborhood destination for years to come.
