Brooklyn Children’s Museum teams up with Haiti Cultural Exchange for a lively day of dance, storytelling, and art. Families are invited to celebrate Haitian Heritage Month through immersive cultural activities.

The Brooklyn Children’s Museum will host a vibrant celebration of Haitian culture on Saturday, May 10, with “Ti Atis (Little Artists) Haitian Heritage Month Selebrasyon!”

Presented in partnership with Haiti Cultural Exchange, the family-friendly event marks the museum’s first official Haitian Heritage Month celebration and also concludes the Ti Atis series, a monthly arts education program that began in November 2024. The day will feature dance, storytelling, crafts and performances that highlight Haiti’s rich cultural traditions, according to a press release.

“Creative expression is one of the ‘stickiest’ ways to help young people learn about our world, because it creates unique and lasting memories,” said Kassandra Khalil, program director of Haiti Cultural Exchange. “Through HCX's Ti Atis series, using Haitian art and our heritage, we welcome future leaders to build a sense of appreciation for all our cultures and respect for our diverse New York community.”

BCM President and Chief Executive Officer Atiba T. Edwards said the museum is proud to celebrate Brooklyn’s Haitian diaspora.

“We’ll be honoring Haiti’s vibrant artistic traditions and learning more about our Haitian friends, family members and neighbors who live right here in Brooklyn and NYC," he said.

The day’s schedule includes:

  • 11:30am to 12:30pm, Rooftop Terrace — Percussionist Sky Menesky and dancer Alexandra Jean Joseph of Immamou Lele will kick off the festivities with traditional Haitian drumming and dance, inviting attendees to join in with body percussion and dance steps.

  • 1:00pm to 2:00pm, Brooklyn Voices Exhibit Space — Jaden Timoun will lead a “Krik? Krak!” oral storytelling session in Haitian Creole, featuring music and movement.

  • 3:00pm to 4:00pm, Commons Theater — Master puppeteer Emmanuel Elpenord will guide families in building tabletop puppets and performing a whimsical Haitian folktale.
