Green-Wood Cemetery will mark the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks with a free evening of remembrance overlooking the annual Tribute in Light memorial on Friday, Sept. 11, 2026.
The event, Notes of Tribute: Viewing the 9/11 Memorial Lights, will begin at 7:00pm at Green-Wood’s Gothic Arch near the cemetery’s main entrance at Fifth Avenue and 25th Street in Brooklyn.
Attendees will then walk to one of Green-Wood’s hills overlooking the Manhattan skyline to view the twin beams of Tribute in Light.
“Twenty-five years later, Sept. 11 remains part of the life of this city and of Green-Wood,” said Meera Joshi, president of The Green-Wood Cemetery. “More than 100 people laid to rest here died in the attacks or from related illnesses, and each represents a family and a community changed by that day. Green-Wood is proud to offer New Yorkers a place to remember them together, as the Tribute in Light rises over the city.”
The program will run until 9:00pm and include words of remembrance, live music and a moment of silence for reflection.
The gathering will have particular significance for Brooklyn and Green-Wood, where more than 100 people who died in the Sept. 11 attacks or from related illnesses in the years that followed are interred.
The event will honor those individuals and their families while remembering all 2,977 people killed in the attacks and reflecting on their lasting impact on New York City and communities across the country.
Green-Wood’s grounds offer a distinctive setting for the commemoration, allowing attendees to reflect on the anniversary while viewing Tribute in Light across the Manhattan skyline.
Established in 1838 and designated a National Historic Landmark, the cemetery is the permanent residence of more than 580,000 people and also serves as an outdoor museum, arboretum and center for history, arts, culture, education and environmental initiatives.
Admission is free, and registration is recommended but not required. Those who register will receive important program updates, including weather-related changes.
The walk includes hills, so attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable shoes.
If the program is canceled because of inclement weather, Green-Wood will notify registered participants by email.
