The Brooklyn Public Library wants you to end the summer with sweet treat and a great book.

BPL and the National Book Foundation’s Book Rich Environments program are celebrating summer with a free icee and book giveaway at community pools starting on Tuesday.

A variety of free books will be available, both in English and Spanish, and focus on back-to-school or pool themes, including National Book Award–honored titles The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo, Swim Team by Johnnie Christmas, and Look Both Ways: A Tale Told in Ten Blocks by Jason Reynolds.

“...we think summer is the perfect time to take home a good book and that everyone should have the opportunity to do so,” said Ruth Dickey, executive director of the National Book Foundation.

Weather permitting, the events take place from 12:30pm to 3:30pm or while supplies last.

BPL joined forces with the National Book Foundation’s Book Rich Environments program to distribute over 1,000 books for children to keep. Book Rich Environments is a nationwide effort to transform areas that lack access to literary resources, often termed “book deserts,” into communities where children and families have access to an abundance of culturally diverse books.

Since 2017, Book Rich Environments has distributed over 2.6 million books to children and families living in public housing communities, and currently partners with 62 HUD-assisted communities in 39 states and Washington, DC.
