The Brooklyn Children’s Museum is bringing back its most popular event, Celebrate Holi, on Saturday, May 3, inviting families to embrace the colors, culture and joy of the Hindu spring festival.
The annual celebration will transform the Crown Heights museum and neighboring Brower Park into a vibrant hub of dance, art, food and play, according to a press release.
The museum expects thousands of attendees for this year’s festivities, which will unfold across three timed sessions: 10:00am to 12:30pm, 1:00pm to 3:30pm and 4:00pm to 6:30pm.
Also known as the “Festival of Colors,” Holi is traditionally celebrated in India and around the world as a symbol of love, renewal and the triumph of good over evil.
"Holi is a time to embrace spring and renewal, and to come together in celebration as one," said Atiba T. Edwards, president and chief executive officer of Brooklyn Children’s Museum. "Seeing children and families covered in colors and dancing to Bollywood beats captures exactly what BCM is all about—bringing our community together through meaningful cultural experiences for upliftment and understanding.”
Each session will feature the same lineup of activities, including Bollywood dance performances by Ajna Dance Company, storytime and cooking demonstrations with The Culture Tree, puppet shows and art-making workshops. Visitors are encouraged to wear white clothing for the full effect of the color powder celebration.
Minila Shah, cultural curator and artistic director at Ajna Dance Company described the event as "one-of-a-kind" and one that offers attendees an "immersive and unforgettable experience."
“Holi is a festival that reminds us of the power of color, joy, and new beginnings," Shah said. "As cultural curator, it’s a privilege to help shape a day that honors the traditions of Holi while creating space for all children to feel seen, included and inspired."
