Community Leaders Honored at Men of Distinction Ceremony

Eleven residents were recognized for their contributions to the community during this year's annual recognition ceremony.

Assemblymember William Colton and Councilmember Susan Zhuang honored 11 southwest Brooklyn residents during the second annual Men of Distinction ceremony, recognizing individuals whose contributions have made a difference in their communities.

The event was held June 27 at the Federation of Italian Americans' Il Centro, located at 8711 18th Ave.

The honorees were Sanal Badmaev, Detective Hassan Diab, Abdurashid Iminov, Michael Kozhar, Dr. Tim Law, Paul Li, Philip Lombardo, Deacon Anthony Mammoliti, Damiano Palazzolo, Imam Ahmed Ali Uzir and Alexander Zhorov. According to the organizers, the group reflects the diversity of southwest Brooklyn and a wide range of achievements.

The annual ceremony recognizes residents whose service has had a positive impact on local neighborhoods. Honorees come from different backgrounds and professions, reflecting the multicultural communities that make up southwest Brooklyn.

"These unsung heroes are men who selflessly give of themselves to assist not only friends and neighbors, but the many members of the community that they will never meet," said Colton. "All of them have committed themselves to the work of making the neighborhood in which they live and work a great place for both residents and visitors alike, and I am delighted to honor them for all they have accomplished."

The event serves as an opportunity to acknowledge individuals whose work often takes place outside the public spotlight while highlighting the role community involvement plays across the area.

Colton said the recipients have dedicated themselves to helping neighbors and improving the communities where they live and work. Zhuang described the honorees as residents who support their families, mentor younger generations and contribute to the community without seeking recognition.

The program also featured performances by the Kalmyk Heritage Center and Pure Dance Studio, adding a cultural element to the ceremony.

Family members, friends and community supporters attended the event as the 11 honorees were recognized for their service and contributions, continuing a recognition program now in its second year.
