The Brooklyn Children’s Museum is turning up the island vibes on Saturday, Aug. 9, with Celebrate the Caribbean, a vibrant day-long festival spotlighting the sights, sounds and flavors of the Caribbean.
Running from 11:00am to 5:00pm, the annual event explores the rich cultures of the Caribbean diaspora through live music, hands-on workshops, dance, food and more. Expect everything from steel pan beats to stilt walkers towering above the crowd.
Festivalgoers can craft colorful Carnival headdresses with WIADCA, join a rhythm-filled performance by Harmony Music Makers on steel drums, and dance along with the high-energy CarNYval Dancers. Inside, kids can cool off while learning photography with Kids with Cameras. Outside, Sesame Flyers Youth Company will dazzle with Moko Jumbies, a Caribbean stilt-walking tradition.
“As a proud Brooklynite and native of St. Vincent and the Grenadines, I couldn't be more excited for Celebrate the Caribbean,” said Atiba T. Edwards, president and chief executive officer of the Brooklyn Children’s Museum. “This festival embodies the joyful, communal, and resilient spirit of Caribbean carnival, from the arts, food and sounds of the Caribbean islands.”
Up on the rooftop, a live DJ set will bring the summer vibes while visitors sample Caribbean dishes and shop from local vendors at a pop-up market curated by Carib Biz.
