The Salvation Army Brownsville Corps hosted a free Mother’s Day Lunch and Craft Event on May 8 for local mothers, caregivers and families ahead of Mother’s Day.
The event was held at the organization’s community center on Riverdale Avenue in Brownsville. Attendees received a complimentary light lunch, took part in craft activities and were provided information on local social services and community resources available in the area.
Organizers said the event aimed to support families in the neighborhood while recognizing the role of mothers and caregivers. The gathering also brought residents together for an afternoon of shared activities and access to support services in a community setting.
“We were honored to provide a meaningful experience for the incredible mothers and caregivers in our community,” said Captain Nereus Mogaria, commanding corps officer of The Salvation Army Brownsville Corps. “Events like this remind families that they are supported and valued, and they help strengthen the sense of connection that is so important in Brownsville.”
Community partners included Harlem United, NYLAG (New York Legal Assistance Group), The Salvation Army Emergency Disaster Services, Having Home and PainInjuryLaw.com. These organizations assisted with resources, programming and outreach during the event, contributing to the activities and services offered to attendees.
Throughout the afternoon, families participated in hands-on craft projects, shared meals and engaged with Salvation Army staff and community representatives. The event also provided opportunities for residents to learn more about ongoing services offered through local organizations, including assistance programs and support initiatives for families.
The Salvation Army Greater New York Division operates community centers, shelters and social service programs across New York City, Long Island and the Lower Hudson Valley. Its services include food assistance programs, youth programming, emergency support services and housing-related assistance designed to support individuals and families in need across the region.
The Mother’s Day event is part of the Brownsville Corps’ broader community programming focused on providing local residents with access to resources, support services and engagement opportunities throughout the year.
