A group of family-owned grocers operating Foodtown and Brooklyn Harvest Market stores across the borough have teamed up with City Harvest and the New York Daily News for a holiday food drive running through Dec. 25.
Donation tables will be set up at the entrances of ten participating supermarkets, where shoppers can find suggestions for non-perishable food items. Customers are encouraged to purchase groceries for donation, contribute extra items during checkout, or bring food from home to place in the collection bins.
“Food insecurity is a growing problem in communities throughout the city, affecting families, seniors, and children alike. Every contribution, no matter the size, makes a difference in ensuring that no one in our community goes hungry” said Daniel Wodzenski, regional manager at Brooklyn Harvest Market and Foodtown.
The effort comes as food insecurity continues to rise across New York City. According to City Harvest, visits to food pantries and soup kitchens have reached record highs, with one in four children unsure where their next meal will come from.
The drive aims to help families struggling with financial hardship and cuts to federal food programs access nutritious meals throughout the holiday season.
Those unable to visit the stores in person can arrange for City Harvest to pick up donations of 100 pounds or more. Contributions can also be dropped off at participating firehouses, police stations, or Apple Bank branches.
Monetary donations are welcome, just $10 can help feed a New York City family for a week. More details are available at cityharvest.org/dailynewsdonate.
