New York Junior Tennis & Learning marked the conclusion of its 38th annual Mayor Dinkins Cup on June 7 with a scholarship ceremony at the Cary Leeds Center for Tennis & Learning.

The event brought together student-athletes from across New York City and highlighted athletic performance alongside academic achievement.

Among this year’s recipients was Bard High School Early College Brooklyn senior Joshua Myers, who will attend the Institute of Culinary Education. Myers was recognized for his performance in tennis as well as his academic and school involvement. NYJTL awarded a total of $124,000 in college scholarships this year.

The Mayor Dinkins Cup, named for former New York City Mayor David N. Dinkins, is the city’s largest free junior interscholastic tennis tournament. It drew more than 800 students in grades 3 through 12 from public, parochial and private schools across all five boroughs. Over a week, students competed in individual and team play across elementary, middle and high school divisions.

The program focuses on athletic development and educational opportunity, concluding with a ceremony where scholarships are awarded based on performance on and off the court.

New York Junior Tennis & Learning, founded in 1971, uses tennis, education and character-building programs to support youth development. It is the largest youth tennis and education nonprofit in the United States, serving more than 90,000 K-12 students across New York City.

The organization runs after-school programs in about 30 schools and community tennis programs at roughly 40 sites during the summer, with additional year-round locations. It also designed, funded and operates the Cary Leeds Center for Tennis & Learning in partnership with New York City, offering free and fee-based tennis instruction along with life skills and wellness programming.
