The Brooklyn Public Library will hold a family day at the Central Library on Saturday, June 28, celebrating The Door Is Always Open, the first major exhibition dedicated to Tove Jansson, creator of the Moomins, in the United States.
The event coincides with the 80th anniversary of the Moomins and highlights Jansson’s lasting impact on children’s literature and art.
Tove Jansson (1914–2001) was a Finnish author and artist best known for creating the Moomins, a series of books and comics translated into more than 60 languages and adapted for games, television, theatre and opera. A key visual artist during Finland’s postwar modernist period, Jansson produced work for nearly seven decades, including painting, illustration, comics and applied art. She studied in Stockholm, Helsinki and Paris, and received the Hans Christian Andersen Medal in 1966.
The schedule includes:
- 11:00am: Storytime with Moomin-themed songs, rhymes and stories
- 1:00pm and 2:00pm: Musical performances by Strawbitty Yops and friends
- 1:30pm: Storytime with author Raquel Ortiz sharing Moomin stories
- 2:00pm: Meet a live Moomin character and pick up a grab-and-go craft kit
- 3:00pm: Children’s animation screening featuring Who Will Comfort Toffle and The Book About Moomin, Mymble and Little My
The exhibition and program are presented by Brooklyn Public Library in partnership with Moomin Characters, Moomin Arabia, Finnair and the City of Tampere, home of the only Moomin Museum in the world.
