The Brooklyn Museum heads into May with a full slate of programming that blends large-scale events with community-centered art experiences anchored by Iris van Herpen: Sculpting the Senses.

The month opens with First Saturdays, running from 5:00pm to 10:00pm on May 2, with a program shaped by themes of renewal and seasonal change. Drawing from Asian American and Pacific Islander diasporic perspectives, the evening brings together performance, literature and visual art while also connecting to contemplative spaces within the museum.

Museum on Wheels on May 9 expands the museum’s reach beyond its walls, starting with a stop in Downtown Brooklyn from 11:00am to 2:00pm during a neighborhood festival ahead of Mother’s Day.

The mobile setup focuses on hands-on activities, including crafts, games and interactive artmaking for families. Later in the month, it returns at Brooklyn Bridge Park’s annual Kite Festival on May 16, where visitors can design wind-inspired creations tied to movement and material.

Inside the museum, teen programming takes focus through a showcase led by participants in the Creative Practice internship on May 9. After a year of training, teens step into teaching roles, guiding visitors through multimedia projects connected to current exhibitions and encouraging reflection and experimentation.

Mother’s Day programming on May 10 continues that participatory approach with artmaking activities and informal gallery talks that explore themes of care and representation. Additional weekend offerings include sketch sessions in the Decorative Arts and Design galleries and a live pop-up performance by the Brooklyn Symphony Orchestra on May 17.

The Brooklyn Artists Ball After Party will occur on May 11, a late-night event featuring music, fashion and special access to a major exhibition, reinforcing the museum’s role as both a cultural and social gathering space.

LGBTQ+ Teen Night on May 29 closes out the month’s youth programming, bringing together LGBTQ+ teens for an evening of artmaking, performance and community-centered activities.
