The Broadway Education Alliance and the Goren Family Foundation on Wednesday announced that the Brooklyn High School of the Arts Select Choir will be honored for excellence in choral group performance at the Roger Rees Awards for Excellence in Student Performance.
The Select Choir is a 33-member ensemble and one of the school’s most advanced vocal groups. Directed by Kristina Allocco, the choir at the Boerum Hill-based high shool is known for its challenging repertoire, cultural engagement and collaborations with professional artists.
The ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, May 17, at 7:00pm at Symphony Space, 2537 Broadway, at West 95th Street, in Manhattan.
Founded in 2021 by Andrew Goren, the Roger Rees Awards recognize the role of theater arts education across the Greater New York region, with a focus on celebrating the creativity, artistry and diversity of high school choral groups.
The program highlights the continued relevance of choral music in theater and honors ensembles that demonstrate strong collaboration, musical discipline and stage presence.
The group will perform as part of the 16th annual Roger Rees Awards talent showcase, hosted by Andrew Keenan-Bolger, a Broadway actor known for originating the role of Crutchie in Newsies, along with work as a writer and director.
The event will also feature 50 high school students nominated for outstanding performer, representing 104 schools from across the Greater New York region. The showcase brings together emerging talent in musical theater for an evening of live performance.
