Brooklyn Children’s Museum and community partners will host their annual Juneteenth celebration on Thursday, June 19, at Shirley Chisholm Circle in Brower Park.
The family-friendly event, themed Still We Rise, in tribute to Maya Angelou’s powerful poem on resilience and determination, will run from 11:00am to 3:00pm and is free and open to the public.
“Juneteenth is about celebrating freedom, family, and the importance of our resilient communities,” says Atiba T. Edwards, president and chief executive officer of Brooklyn Children’s Museum. “At BCM, we love bringing people together. Our annual Juneteenth celebration in Brower Park is exactly what community looks like – people learning together, sharing experiences, and creating the kind of connections that make our neighborhood stronger.”
The day will feature live performances, creative workshops and hands-on activities that celebrate culture, freedom and community. Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and creates space to reflect on the nation’s painful past while embracing hope, justice and unity.
The event is organized in partnership with Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, Friends of Brower Park, Brooklyn Public Library’s Brower Park branch, Crown Heights North Association, Council Member Chi Ossé and Repair the World Brooklyn.
Programming includes performances by Brooklyn United Marching Band, Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, Brooklyn Interdenominational Choir and Red Sahara, a Brooklyn-based musical duo. Guests can also participate in line dance workshops led by STooPS, storytime and bookmobile activities from Brooklyn Public Library, a free book giveaway by Brooklyn Book Bodega and planting experiences with Field Meridians.
Brooklyn Children’s Museum will lead a special bookmaking and quilting activity inspired by the African American quilting community of Gee’s Bend. Food will be available from The Bergen food truck, and more performers and community partners will be announced in the coming days.
