Brooklyn Children’s Museum is bringing the joy of roller skating back to the borough with Empire Skate of Mind, a rooftop roller rink opening Nov.15. Set to disco beats and skyline views, the new attraction invites families to skate together under the open sky.

The rink welcomes all ages and skill levels, from first-timers finding their balance to seasoned skaters cruising to classic tracks. Rental skates, helmets and wrist guards are available; each skating ticket includes full access to the museum’s exhibits.

The rink pays tribute to the legendary Empire Roller Rink, once located less than a mile away on Empire Boulevard. From the 1940s to 2007, Empire was a Brooklyn institution and the birthplace of roller disco in New York, drawing crowds that included icons like Cher, Prince and Elton John. The new rink channels that same community spirit with a family-friendly twist.

"Empire Skate of Mind is bigger than skating - it is about community, creativity and fun," said Atiba T. Edwards, president and chief executive officer of the Brooklyn Children's Museum. "That's exactly the kind of experience we want every child to have."

Running through April 12, 2026, Empire Skate of Mind will operate weekdays from 2:00pm – 5:00pm and weekends from 10:00am – 5:00pm.

Tickets are $10 per person with skate rentals ($8 for members) or $8 for those bringing their own skates ($6 for members). Museum admission is $15 per person, free for members and children under one. The rink is open to skaters ages three and up.

Families can also book birthday parties at the rink for a festive spin on celebrations. More details, including ticket information, can be found at brooklynkids.org/empire.
