Brooklyn Celebrates National Voter Registration Day at Abolitionist Place

About 100 people registered to vote, according to the organizers.

Brooklyn residents gathered at Abolitionist Place on Sept.17  in Downtown Brooklyn for “Dancing for Democracy,” an event to promote voter registration and raise awareness about the election process while bringing the community together through music and dance.

Hosted by the Downtown Brooklyn Partnership and several civic organizations in celebration of National Voter Registration Day, about 100 people registered to vote, according to a press release.

"The goal for Dancing for Democracy is to create a fun, welcoming environment for our community to come together and learn about voter registration and the election process, while also letting loose and celebrating democracy," said Regina Myer, president of Downtown Brooklyn Partnership. "Appropriately staged at Abolitionist Place, with civic-themed activities, a voter registration station, free giveaways, and a bustling dance floor, Dancing for Democracy is civic-duty done the Brooklyn way."

Partnering with organizations like Brooklyn Org, NYC Votes, YVote, and the Center for Law and Social Justice, the event featured a range of civic-focused activities, including voter registration stations, interactive booths and information about upcoming elections.

Attendees were also treated to free giveaways, including Brooklyn Made gift cards and the chance to win a limited-edition Dancing for Democracy T-shirt.

The evening’s soundtrack was provided by DJs Misbehaviour and Evil Dee, who kept the crowd energized with beats that had Brooklynites dancing as they registered to vote. Civic groups emphasized the importance of voter participation, with volunteers on hand to answer questions about the election process and the steps required to register.

The event offered a unique blend of entertainment and civic engagement, combining the joy of dancing with the importance of voting — a Brooklyn-style celebration of democracy aimed at increasing voter turnout and awareness in the upcoming elections.
