Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso joined leaders from HASC Center, community members and families on Thursday for a ribbon cutting celebrating the center’s five new wheelchair-accessible vans.
The vehicles were purchased with $564,000 in FY26 capital funding allocated by Reynoso. They will be used to transport Brooklynites with developmental disabilities to medical appointments and recreational activities, officials said.
“When we invest in accessibility, we invest in equity,” Reynoso said in a statement. “Accessible, reliable transportation empowers Brooklynites with developmental disabilities to live with dignity and independence, whether they’re traveling to medical appointments, heading to work or day programs, or participating in recreational activities that connect them to their community."
Founded in Midwood more than 60 years ago, HASC Center provides comprehensive services to children and adults with developmental disabilities. The center supports hundreds of individuals and their families across New York City, offering residential, vocational, educational and clinical programs. Services are designed to promote independence, dignity and community engagement.
“HASC Center extends its heartfelt gratitude to Brooklyn Borough President Antonio Reynoso for his remarkable allocation of five wheelchair-accessible vans, empowering individuals with special needs and enhancing their quality of life,” said HASC Center Chief Executive Officer Shmiel Kahn. “These specially equipped vans will provide vital transportation, fostering independence and inclusivity. We're deeply moved by President Reynoso's kindness and commitment to our community. His thoughtfulness will have a lasting impact, and we're honored to partner with him in creating a more accessible and compassionate world.”
