Elected officials and local residents on Monday unveiled the renovations to the Lefferts Place Community Garden in Bedford-Stuyvesant, marking Earth Week with the celebration of an expanded green space for the neighborhood.
The garden, located at 162 Lefferts Pl., now features a new gazebo and seating area, updated landscape design, additional planting beds, and flowers and shrubbery designed to thrive in shaded areas. The upgrades were completed by local garden design company Tulip King, according to a press release.
“Since 1984, the Lefferts Place Community Garden has been a labor of love for the residents of our block, who work every year to bring it to life,” said Bernice Moses, steward of the garden. “Today we celebrate additional improvements to the garden that we were able to make over the past two seasons with support from GreenThumb and our neighbors on Atlantic Avenue. Collaborative efforts like these help to ensure the garden can continue to bloom and grow for years to come.”
New York State Assembly Member Phara Souffrant Forrest and City Council Member Chi Ossé joined the celebration, underscoring the role of community partnerships in sustaining public green spaces.
The Lefferts Place Community Garden is one of more than 550 community gardens across the city supported by NYC Parks GreenThumb, the nation’s largest urban gardening program.
The garden’s $45,000 renovation was funded by the 1057 Atlantic Avenue Community Impact Fund, established in 2022 by developers of a mixed-income residential building rising behind the garden.
