Asase Yaa Cultural Arts Foundation’s School of the Arts held its 13th Annual Finale Recital, BLACK DANCE IS..., at Hunter College’s Sylvia and Danny Kaye Playhouse on Sunday, June 22.
The sold-out event brought together families, friends and neighbors to celebrate the power, rhythm and cultural heritage of Black dance across generations and cultures worldwide.
Students ages 3 to 17 delivered a high-energy showcase featuring West African, modern jazz, Hip-Hop, tap and ballet styles taught during the School of the Arts' 37-week youth dance program. For the 2024-25 season, students trained in the foundation’s new community arts center in Bedford-Stuyvesant, which offers three dance studios, a music room, a community lounge and office space.
This year’s theme, BLACK DANCE IS..., honored the rich history of Black dance and its influence on global art and culture. The recital highlighted Asase Yaa’s ongoing commitment to preserving and promoting African diasporic traditions through education and performance in Brooklyn and beyond.
