Brooklyn-based Asase Yaa Cultural Arts Foundation will kick off the school year at their new state-of-the-art dance studio in Bedfrod Stuyvesant, with classes beginning on Friday, Oct. 4.

Now in its thirteenth year, the school’s dance and drum programs are offered to students ages 3 through 18 and run for 37 weeks, according to a press release.

This year’s theme of “Black Dance Is...” aims to educate students about the rich history of Black dance and how it has both shaped and influenced the landscape of the arts worldwide.

Students will have the opportunity to learn about this topic in the foundation’s new, fully inclusive community arts space featuring three dance studios, a music room and community lounge.

Dance styles offered during the 2024-25 school year include: African, ballet, modern, jazz, tap, hip-hop, Caribbean Folklore, drum styles, Djembe, Afro Cuban and buckets.

"I am beyond excited about welcoming our returning and new students to our spacious new home and adding nine amazing teaching artists to our staff,” said Zakiya Harris, the artistic director of the School of the Arts, Asase Yaa Cultural Arts Foundation. “Their innate talents support our dedicated mission to create a rich arts, education, culture, and holistic experience for our youth."
