There will be several reflective events marking the 24th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks in Brooklyn on Thursday, offering residents opportunities to memorialize the tragedy and honor those who continue to be affected.
A community memorial service will commence at 11:00am in Seth Low Park in Bensonhurst. Hosted by Council Member Susan Zhuang and Assembly Member William Colton, the program will include color guards, the Pledge of Allegiance, the National Anthem performed by students from I.S. 96 Seth Low, interfaith prayers, keynote speakers and a moment of silence for those lost and those who helped rebuild the city.
"September 11 will forever remain a day of reflection and remembrance. It is a time to stand united as a community, remember the fallen, and recommit ourselves to ensuring their legacy lives on," Colton said in a statement.
Later on Sept. 11, additional services will take place across the borough:
-
At 12:00pm, St. Philip’s Episcopal Church of Dyker Heights (1072 80th Street) will hold a memorial mass to honor lives lost in the attacks.
-
At 6:30pm, a memorial vigil at Sunset Park’s 9/11 Living Memorial Grove will be led by Assembly Member Marcela Mitaynes, Council Member Alexa Avilés, and Community Board 7.
-
At 7:00pm, the American Veterans Memorial Pier in Bay Ridge will host an annual vigil co-sponsored by Council Member Justin Brannan and State Senator Andrew Gounardes, featuring community remarks and interfaith prayers.
Meanwhile, Green-Wood Cemetery will host Notes of Tribute: Viewing the 9/11 Memorial Lights from 7:00pm to 9:00pm. Attendees will gather on the cemetery’s heights to watch the Tribute in Light illuminating lower Manhattan, followed by readings and speeches honoring the deceased.
