Weather conditions this past Monday might have been the most treacherous the city has seen in the past 12 months. Yet, children were sent to school, nothing was shut down and a regular work day was encouraged.
The mix of snow and freezing rain that hit New York City on Monday made roads dangerous for millions of Brooklyn residents through most of the day and was to blame for the deaths of two people in a serious crash on Interstate 95.
Travel on the entire No. 7 subway line, which runs between Times Square and Main Street in Flushing, Queens, was brought to a halt at around 9:30 Monday morning when one train stalled because of ice that had amassed on the third rail. As a result, several other trains were forced to stop along the line until after two hours, commuters finally were able to deboard.
A 71-year-old man was seriously injured on Monday when a manhole cover flew into the air and landed on him near Prospect Park West and 5th Street in Brooklyn, police reported. The man, who was not identified by the police, was taken to Lutheran Hospital where he was listed in critical condition.
What's worst, since temperatures continued plummeting Monday night, Tuesday's outlook is not faring much better.
Tuesday in Brooklyn will be partly cloudy with high temperatures around 18 degrees (but it will feel more like 6 degrees), according to weather.com. Winds WNW at 5 to 10 mph. And already, at 7:00am, it is now more than 15 degrees colder than it was yesterday at this time.
