The Crown Heights section of Brooklyn continues to expand its support for artists as they welcome the SRO Gallery to the neighborhood. Nestled onto Dean Street and housed in a gorgeous land-marked brownstone, this art gallery describes itself as a "a single room attempt to display disparate landscapes, social facts, coincidence and incongruities."
According to a recent interview, the gallery is aptly named SRO (single room occupancy) as it hopes to serve as an inviting space for thematically curated exhibits that can comfortably fit inside the front room of the home. The owner. Cecilia Whittaker-Doe, lives nearby and has been a Brooklyn resident for over 25 years. In her view, the Crown Heights location was carefully calculated based on changes within the borough over recent years.
"Bushwick has already arrived and the L train is going to shut down for a couple of years, unfortunately. I love the galleries in Bushwick but this area now, places are starting to pop up," She explained.
The gallery first opened its doors last Friday at 1144 Dean St. between Rogers and Nostrand avenues. With a dynamic 24 painting exhibit already on display, SRO showcased Brooklyn-born artist Archie Rand. Art lovers and Brooklynites alike can visit the exhibit until May 25th, as the gallery plans to rotate work every four to six weeks.
