The U.S. Department of the Interior's National Park Service on Thursday added the Brooklyn Navy Yard to the National Register of Historic Places, reported The Daily News. The 300-acre industrial complex is the city's oldest and largest and one of six original shipyards in the country, officials said. The federal designation puts it in the same league as the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building.
Navy Yard officials are hoping the new status will help facilitate access to federal funding and tax credits: "It'll make securing historic tax credits easier for us with the purpose of restoring historic buildings and creating jobs," Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation President David Ehrenberg told the paper.
