This Saturday, Brownsville’s Dr. Green Playground will become a health hub with free vaccines and testing as part of a series of health fairs being held by EmblemHealth.

The Healthier Futures Wellness Expo is open to the public and will provide free COVID-19 and flu vaccinations, as well as a number of other medical screenings, including breast cancer, diabetes and HIV screenings. It will also host a job fair, live entertainment, food and other activities.

EmblemHealth said in a statement that with the pandemic severely impacting people’s accessibility to routine and essential health care resources, the nonprofit insurance provider had created a series of expos to eliminate barriers to care by brining healthcare access deeper into New York City neighborhoods.

“Doctors and health facilities are currently seeing the harmful effects of delayed care across the spectrum of health care needs due to the pandemic,” the organization said, citing a recent Harvard study showing that one in five Americans reported that they or a household member delayed receiving medical care or was unable to get care due to the crisis.

“These statistics are even more glaring in underserved communities and in communities of color. This event delivers on EmblemHealth’s mission to create healthier futures for the communities it serves.”

The event will be held with local elected officials and community organizations at Dr. Green Playground on Mother Gaston Blvd. from 11:00am to 4:00pm on Saturday, October 2.

Throughout October, EmblemHealth will host a series of the fairs in selected NYC neighborhoods.
