The Red Hook section of Brooklyn is expecting a large influx of visitors as it prepares to host Fleet Week New York, the city's celebration of the Navy, Marines, and the Coast Guard. The well-known week long of activities is in it's 28th year and kicked off their festivities today with a Parade of Ships into New York Harbor. According to a recent report, the celebration will feature a wide array of activities where locals and visitors can enjoy the rich marine history.
Although the festivities have undergone a makeover in recent years, the traditional Fleet Week kickoff still takes place on Brooklyn's Fort Hamilton Bluff, where a dramatic 11-gun salute was fired off to commemorate the beginning of the week. It is estimated that about 4,500 sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen will descend upon New York City in the coming days as they prepare to take part in events, parades, and drill team performances.
On Saturday May 28th, the VFW Post 5195 is planning to offer visitors a chance to attend a street party at 325 Van Brunt St. from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in honor of Fleet Street. This and a wide selection of similar events makes it easy for Brooklynites to join in on the fleet week fun even if their work schedule doesn't allow a week-long of activities.
