Community Board 9, which serves the South Crown Heights and Prospect-Lefferts Gardens area, held its monthly meeting on Tuesday, May 24.
The meeting started off with a brief announcement from a representative from the NAACP, reminding residents that the local branch will meet on May 25 at 7:00pm at Restoration Plaza.
On behalf of New York State's Aware Prepare program, second lieutenant Luz Garcia encouraged residents to take advantage of the Citizen Preparedness Corps. The CPC was designed by Governor Andrew Cuomo and the Office of Emergency Management in the wake of Hurricane Sandy to train New Yorkers on how to prepare for any future natural disasters. The training session is free and can be brought to any church, school or organization.
Making the first of two appeals to the board that evening, HeartShare Human Services of New York asked the board to write a letter supporting the nonprofit's plan to set up a community residence at 934 Carroll Street. This apartment would be home to four young men with developmental disabilities and their counselors. The board voted to write the letter.
The board also voted to write a letter of support for Anthony Briggs, who wants to co-name Rutland Road and Rogers Avenue in honor of his late mother Lenore G. Briggs. Lenore Briggs, who immigrated from Grenada in 1965, founded the Lefferts Gardens Montessori School. Anthony Briggs said that over his mother's long career as an educator, she may have affected the lives of nearly 5,000 children. With the community board's approval under his belt, Briggs will meet with a City Council member on Thursday, May 26.
Community Board 9 meets on the the fourth Tuesday of each month (except during July and August) at 7pm at M.S. 61.
