Residents and partnering organizations recently marked the completion of East New York's Penn-Wortman Houses Community Garden with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The garden now has a new drip irrigation system donated and installed by Pacific Lawn Sprinklers, supporting residents’ efforts to grow fresh produce and maintain a shared neighborhood space.
“Being able to use what we do every day to help residents grow fresh food and enjoy this community garden made this project especially meaningful for our team,” said Mary Mahoney, brand president of Pacific Lawn Sprinklers. “A well-designed drip irrigation system delivers water directly where plants need it while making the garden easier for residents to maintain. We’re proud to have played a small part in helping this garden thrive for years to come.”
The new irrigation system is designed to deliver water directly to plants, helping make the garden easier for residents to maintain. Its installation was among the contributions from local businesses that supported the garden’s development, alongside the raised beds, soil and plants provided by Greengage UrbanScape NYC.
The garden provides Penn-Wortman residents with a space to grow fresh food while creating an outdoor resource for the East New York community. The project also highlights how resident leadership and partnerships with local businesses can help improve shared spaces.
The project is a part of Stanley Avenue PACT revitalization project, which serves the Linden and Penn-Wortman campuses. The project includes the preservation and modernization of nearly 2,000 apartments, along with a community center, space for on-site social and resident services and improvements to public spaces.
With the garden now complete, residents can continue using the space to grow produce and maintain a shared community resource. The improvements add to ongoing work at the Linden and Penn-Wortman campuses while preserving a garden shaped by residents’ efforts and local partnerships.
