NYPD To Place More Officers Underground to Stem Subway Violence

Kemper said the deployment demonstrated the NYPD's dedication to curbing subway crimes.

The NYPD increased its presence in the subway system by up to 1,000 cops per day, after a deadly first two months of 2024 that’s seen three people murdered. NYPD Transit Chief Michael Kemper said Monday that the police surge began at the start of February, after the January murder of Richard Henderson aboard a No. 3 train at Franklin Avenue in Brooklyn. February has seen two additional, high-profile murders, including the Feb. 12 shooting at the Bronx’s Mount Eden Avenue stop on the No. 4 line.
